34) “Unplug” yourself for a day

Unplugged day

So in order to achieve one of the required achievements in COL270, I was instructed to have a day off from all electronics and technology. I also wanted to challenge my self if I am going to survive the day without my smartphone and laptop. I kept my electronics somewhere away from my sight so I don’t break the challenge because I know I wont be able to resist if I saw my phone and laptop somewhere near me. I usually start my day by watching a TV show or texting and using other social media. Instead I spent my morning reading a book, then I started organizing my room, then I organized my books and started studying and preparing my self for the upcoming midterms, till it was lunch time which is the time where all of my family members gather. I spent all the afternoon and evening with my siblings and parents, chatting and laughing. It felt good to have some quality time with my family, because I distanced my self from them in the last while because of social media and technology addiction.  Then it was bedtime. I survived a whole day 24 hours without using any of my electronics.

It was hard at the begging and I felt the day passed so slow because I usually entertain my self using my mobile phone or laptop, but it was worth the try, and I believe I will do it every while and then to have a peaceful time with my family and to relieve my self from stress without any modern technology.

The ELife Internet package we purchased from Etisalat is 30 mbps, but according to http://speedtest.net/ the highest download speed I got is 29.09 at 7:15 pm and the lowest rate I got was 19.40 mbps at 5:13 pm, and this time many of house members were connected to the internet so the pressure on the connection decreased the speed, while at all the other timings I reordered I got a really good rates because most of the time I was the only device connected to the Internet. To sum up all the rates I got, I calculated the average of the 5 timings I recorder and I got 25.62 mbps which is close to the package and this is the throughput of my Internet package.  I never got the exact bandwidth I purchased from Etisalat.

One of my COL270 achievements is to educate a younger relative, and I felt that I have to do it because children now a day are not aware of how dangerous surfing the Internet is. I discussed some important topics with my niece like how important it is to think twice before uploading anything on the web, and take caution of the information she shares, because once it is out everyone can access it. I also discussed with her some of social media etiquette and what are her limits on social media and to be aware of not making new friends on social media and keeping her relation formal with them. I also educated her of how she should protect her laptop and tablet from viruses what she was already aware of, and to install anti-virus program to prevent getting any virus.  She was amazed by the examples I showed her of people being fooled and she promised me that she will be very careful when surfing the internet.
